Social Media Campaign:
Leave the Acting to the Humans

The basis of the campaign:
-
Advocate for the removal of animals in entertainment shows
-
Encourage the boycott places that use animals in entertainment
Our objectives:
-
To raise awareness within the UCI student community (and for “millennials,” high school, and college students in general) about a specific animal advocacy issue
-
To provide knowledge to the audiences about relevant research in the field of animal science
-
To practice making arguments and using rhetoric in real-life media (logos, ethos, pathos)
-
To learn the affordances of different social media sites and use each one for its unique potential
-
To practice new media writing
-
To assess the efficacy of the social media campaign through a specific means

After taking a few minutes to decide on a topic to do our campaign on, my groupmates and I went to straight to creating social media accounts for our campaign. We decided to utilize Instagram and Twitter for this project, along with the use of a custom website.
The first social media platform we utilized was Instagram. I created this account and took control of it, mainly just focusing on our follower count. We all used this account to post pictures and infographics, however. I followed accounts that were following other accounts with similar purposes, so we were able to gain a lot of followers through this method. I definitley believe our Instagram account was the most succesfull.

The second social media platform that we utilized was Twitter. Here we weren't nearly as successful follower-wise. However, we were able to share a lot more images and ideas on here. The limited character count was also an issue we faced using twitter.

One of my favorite parts of the campaign was making custom infographics with some of the information we gathered through research. I created these short infographic images on the first day of our campaign and posted them both on Instagram and Twitter.
Throughout our entire campaign, we used the hashtags #AnimalsArentActors and #LeaveThe ActingToTheHumans

Throughout the week, we had a website specifically for our campaign. We decided to use the Weebly website creator. This website was used as the homebase for the campaign, where our mission statement was clear, and links to our social media ccounts were easily found. This website received over 450 views that week, we also collected over 60 signatures on our pledge.
